Y-strainers: Essential protection for irrigation and civil works systems
A Y-strainer is a mechanical filtration device designed to remove unwanted solids from liquid, gas or steam pipelines. Its main function is to act as a protective barrier for critical equipment such as pumps, meters and control valves, preventing damage from contaminants such as rust or sediment. Installing one prevents failures, reduces unscheduled shutdowns and extends the service life of components. At Grupo Almagro, with more than 28 years of experience manufacturing valves and fittings for irrigation and civil works, we understand that a Y-strainer is an investment in the safety and efficiency of your infrastructure.
Product catalogue: Y-strainers for irrigation and civil works
Below you will find our complete range of Y-strainers, designed and manufactured to meet the most demanding specifications of modern irrigation networks and civil infrastructure projects. Every model in our catalogue has been developed with durability, hydraulic efficiency and ease of maintenance in mind.
We invite you to explore the specific solutions we offer. By accessing each product page, you can download detailed technical data sheets and full material specifications, and check the available dimensions. Our technical team is at your disposal to advise you on choosing the strainer that best suits the needs of your system.
Key advantages of Grupo Almagro Y-type strainers
Choosing a Grupo Almagro Y-strainer translates into direct benefits for your installation.
- Superior Protection: They intercept harmful particles before they damage vital components, reducing costly repairs.
- Hydraulic Efficiency: Designed for effective filtration with minimal pressure drop, optimising energy performance.
- Versatility: Their "Y" shape allows flexible installation in horizontal and vertical pipelines.
- Cost-Effectiveness: By preventing breakdowns, they reduce operating costs and the system's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
- Simplified Maintenance: Easy-access blow-off caps allow quick cleaning without removing the strainer from the line.
Strategic applications in irrigation and civil works
Grupo Almagro's specialisation allows us to offer strainers adapted to each sector.
- Irrigation Systems: They are an infallible barrier against the sand and sediment that block drippers and micro-sprinklers.
- Water Supply Networks: They are installed upstream of water meters to protect their mechanisms and ensure accurate readings. They are essential in pumping stations and treatment plants.
- Other Applications: Their robustness makes them ideal for HVAC systems, fire protection and various industrial applications (steam, hydraulic oil) where fluid purity is essential.
Technical Excellence: Materials and specifications
The reliability of a strainer depends on the quality of its materials.
- Body Materials: We offer Cast/Ductile Iron for general applications, Stainless Steel for corrosive or high-hygiene fluids, Bronze/Brass for small diameters and Polymer Materials (PVC) for lines carrying specific chemicals.
- Connection Types: We offer flanged connections for large diameters, threaded for quick installations and welded for permanent joints.
- Filter Screen: The heart of the strainer is its stainless steel screen. The degree of filtration is defined by the mesh size or in microns, determining which particles are retained.
Selection, Installation and Maintenance
A Y-strainer requires correct selection, installation and maintenance.
- Selection: To choose the right strainer, consider the type of fluid, the operating conditions, the pipe diameter, the solids load and the degree of filtration required.
- Installation: It is crucial to install the strainer with the arrow on the body pointing in the direction of flow. The strainer leg must always face downwards to collect debris. In steam or gas lines, installation must be horizontal. Make sure the pipe is well supported and leave room for cleaning.
- Maintenance: Cleaning should be carried out when the differential pressure between inlet and outlet rises by 0.3 to 0.7 bar. To clean, isolate and depressurise the strainer, remove the cap and the screen, and clean it with water or compressed air against the direction of flow. Inspect the screen and the gasket before reassembling.
For more than 28 years, Grupo Almagro has been a strategic partner for irrigation and civil works professionals. We understand that choosing the right strainer is a key measure for protecting valuable assets and ensuring operational continuity. Our experience is your guarantee of quality.
